History of Marsden Colliery Village Residents 1881 – 1962 Compiled by Bill Robinson 2019
Marsden Village was built to house the miners and their families who worked at the Whitburn/Marsden
Colliery which was constructed in the mid 1870’s.
At the time of the 1881 census only 4 streets existed, John Street, William Street, Charles Street & Hilton Street, 76 houses in total.
North Street, James Street, Henry Street, George Street & Lindsay Street were added by the time of the 1891 Census an additional 63 houses giving the village a total of 139 dwellings.

The1921 Census is not due until 2022, so I have used the Electoral Records after 1911 which do not give the same level of details of the family.
I feel there are errors in the 1920 Electoral Roll which cannot be corrected until it is checked in 2021/22 Census when it becomes available. The information detailed for the families is brief and includes the dates of birth given by the census which is not necessarily correct.
I have not included any persons shown on the census such as lodgers etc who are not related to the household.
I have supplemented the information with the use of the South Tyneside Online Records facilities which gives the details of Births, Deaths & Marriages of the borough. It is one of very few which supplies this information without charge.
For additional information and to assist in further work I have identified the children listed as born in Whitburn or Marsden by slanting / underlining their names ‘’ Joseph, Mary etc ‘’
The first children born in the village according to the 1881 Census & South Shields On-line Records, these can only be verified by their birth certificates and also confirmed dates of the houses that were built at the time.

Notes re the Laffey family, Thomas married a Louisa Chapman in 1909, no records of a Thomas Laffey marrying a Teresa and then there is a change to Louisa in 1949. I wonder if there was a mistake in 1920 which continued until 1949. The 1911 census shows Thomas & Louisa 1887 from Spennymoor, living in South Shields, no records of another Thomas Laffey married in 1911 Census. There is also 1849 John Hann Chapman staying with the family, in 1956 John Hann is living with his father Ralph Chapman, who was brother to Louisa. The 1921 Census will give more detail.
